Import Export Registration FAQs
Clear answers to the questions we hear most about IEC, RCMC, ICEGATE, AD Code, GST, LUT and FSSAI.
Getting started
IEC & DGFT
What is an IEC code and who needs it?
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by DGFT and linked to your PAN. Any individual, firm or company that imports or exports goods or services from India needs an IEC for customs clearance, foreign remittances and export benefits.
How long does IEC registration take and what is the government fee?
The DGFT government fee for a new IEC is ₹500. With correct documents, the IEC is usually issued within 1–3 working days of filing.
Does an IEC need to be renewed?
An IEC is valid for life, but DGFT requires it to be updated online every year between April and June – even if nothing has changed. If it isn't updated, the IEC can be deactivated. We send our clients reminders and handle the update.
Can an individual get an IEC without a company?
Yes. A proprietor or individual can get an IEC using their own PAN. You can register a company or LLP later if your business grows.
What is RCMC and is it compulsory?
RCMC (Registration-cum-Membership Certificate) is issued by an Export Promotion Council, FIEO or a commodity board such as APEDA or the Spices Board. It is needed to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, and for certain products it is mandatory before export. It is generally valid for five years.
Shipping
Customs, ICEGATE & AD Code
Why do I need ICEGATE registration?
ICEGATE is the Customs e-filing portal. Registration lets you upload documents on e-Sanchit, track shipping bills and bills of entry, pay duty online and follow your IGST refunds and drawback.
What is an AD Code and where do I register it?
The Authorised Dealer (AD) Code is a 14-digit code your bank issues for foreign exchange transactions. Exporters must register it with Customs at every port or ICD they export from. Without it, a shipping bill cannot be generated.
Do you handle customs clearance?
We coordinate customs clearance and freight through licensed customs brokers and forwarders. We also check your documents – invoice, packing list, HS code and licences – before filing, to avoid delays.
Tax
GST & LUT
Is GST registration required for import export?
GST is not required to obtain an IEC. However, importers need a GSTIN to claim input credit for IGST paid at customs. Exporters need it to file an LUT and claim refunds, and inter-state supply of goods requires GST registration in any case.
What is a GST LUT and how often must it be filed?
A Letter of Undertaking (Form GST RFD-11) lets you export goods or services without paying IGST. It is valid for one financial year, so it should be filed every year before your first export of that year.
How do exporters get GST refunds?
If you export with payment of IGST, the shipping bill itself is treated as the refund claim once your returns match. If you export under LUT, you can claim a refund of unutilised input tax credit using Form RFD-01. We handle both.
Licences
FSSAI, MSME & Others
Which FSSAI licence does a food importer or exporter need?
Food importers and exporters need an FSSAI Central Licence, which is linked to their IEC. Other food businesses need basic registration, a State licence or a Central licence depending on their turnover and activity.
What are the benefits of Udyam (MSME) registration?
Udyam registration is free. It gives you access to priority-sector loans, collateral-free credit schemes, government subsidies, concessions on trademark fees and protection against delayed payments from buyers.
Do importers need Legal Metrology (LMPC) registration?
Yes. Importers of pre-packaged commodities must register under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules. They must also print mandatory declarations, such as the importer's name and address, MRP and net quantity, on each package.
Can I complete everything online without visiting your office?
Yes. Most of our clients share documents on WhatsApp or email and receive their certificates digitally. You are always welcome to visit our office beside Ameerpet Metro Station, Hyderabad.
